Nedbank Private Wealth supports Isle of Man apprentice schemes

09 March 2018

Local company Nedbank Private Wealth is proud to support the Isle of Man Apprenticeship programme, and currently employs three young apprentices through the scheme.

Oliver Morris, 20, joined the bank’s operations team in August 2017, and he was followed by Jessica Ward and Jack Leasor, who both joined in September 2017 through the Manx Information Communication Technology Association (MICTA).

Oliver said:

“Working in the banking environment alongside my studying really helps consolidate and improve my understanding of the industry. I am looking forward to completing my Level 3 Professional Banker Certificate with the Chartered Banker Institute, and to what the future holds. I am really grateful to Nedbank Private Wealth for providing this opportunity.”
Jessica and Jack, both 19, have joined the IT department. Jessica works as an apprentice software developer with the system development team, and Jack has joined the system support team as an apprentice on the Help Desk.

Jessica said:

“The course I’m completing at UCM goes perfectly with working in the system development team, as I am able to grasp the concepts I learn at college much more efficiently, and can apply the theory to my job. Overall, I think it has been a wonderful experience so far - I really feel like I’m part of the team and I’m getting lots of support regarding the software I am developing.”

Jack commented:

“In the first couple of days I was quite nervous, but over time I have settled in well. I now feel very familiar and comfortable within the team. My colleagues have made me feel very welcome and are helping me to extend my skillset and confidence. Nedbank Private Wealth has great principles, ethics and values, and I am really enjoying the experience."
Laurence Skelly MHK, Minister for Enterprise, visited the Nedbank Private Wealth office to meet with the young apprentices. Mr Skelly said:

“Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to gain the skills and technical knowledge needed to enter the workplace. The Government has led the way in vocational training, supporting apprenticeships in the Isle of Man for many years and expanding from traditional trades to new sectors to reflect the needs of our modern, diverse economy.

“Apprenticeships are an interactive way of learning with a large proportion of time spent in a job working alongside and gaining experience from skilled colleagues. The programme is dependent on developing close working partnerships between government and the private sector, and it is great to meet Jessica, Jack and Oliver and see this in action at Nedbank Private Wealth.”

Lynn Kelly, Senior Training and Development Executive at Nedbank Private Wealth, said:

“We understand how important it is to develop and retain professional skills in the Manx economy, and this scheme offers a great opportunity for young people to continue their education and gain qualifications without leaving the Island. Our three trainees have become valued members of the Nedbank Private Wealth team, while developing new skills and building experience which will be beneficial throughout their careers. We are delighted to support the scheme.”
