Programme of events for 'Supermanx' long bank holiday weekend announced

11 August 2020

The Department for Enterprise has announced a packed programme of special events for Isle of Man residents and visitors from Guernsey to look forward to. The 'Supermanx' Bank Holiday will take place Friday 28 August to Monday 31 August 2020 and encompasses the whole Island, with community events in Douglas, Ramsey, Laxey, Peel, Castletown and Port Erin.

Laurence Skelly MHK, Minister for Enterprise, said:

'We are delighted to be celebrating the hard work of our residents, businesses and key workers with this four day weekend, and I'd like to personally thank all of the event organisers and local authorities who have contributed to making this exciting series of events happen. The schedule has something for everyone, ranging from family fun days, a TT Course Parade, Manx food and produce, local bands to mass participation sport.'

In addition to the local authority led events there is a ‘Supermanx Key Worker Thank You’ Parade which leaves the TT Grandstand at 3pm, Saturday 29 August. The TT Course parade, supported by over 400 motorcyclists, will be headed by vehicles representing emergency services, key workers, the health service, vital-service companies and voluntary organisations. While the head of the parade can’t include everyone, it is symbolic of everyone that played a part during COVID-19 and it promises to be a great spectacle. Event organiser, Kevin Dodd, would love the Island’s residents to line the TT course to cheer this cavalcade through the towns and villages and show their support and appreciation.

A National Service of Reflection will be held at 11am Friday 28 August at St George’s Church, Douglas. Everyone is welcome, particularly health workers and key workers. The National Service of Reflection will be led by Archdeacon Andrew Brown and the Lord Bishop will deliver the sermon. The service provides an opportunity to say thank you to those who helped the Island through COVID-19 and to think of those who lost their lives to the pandemic.

Alfred Cannan MHK, Treasury Minister, said:

‘The aims of the Supermanx Bank Holiday are for the Isle of Man to collectively say a sincere thank you to the health workers, key workers, organisations and volunteers who helped the Island through the pandemic and for local communities to come together for special events.’
